The national flag of the United States of America, often referred to as the American flag, consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton (referred to specifically as the "union") bearing fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first states in the Union.[1] Nicknames for the flag include the "Stars and Stripes", "Old Glory",[2] and "The Star-Spangled Banner". The modern meaning of the flag was forged in December 1860, when Major Robert Anderson moved the U.S. garrison from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Adam Goodheart argues this was the opening move of the Civil War, and the flag was used throughout the North to symbolize American nationalism and rejection of secessionism.

In Western culture, the finger (as in giving someone the finger or the bird[1]), also known as the finger wave, the middle finger, flipping someone off,[1] flipping the bird, shooting the bird, the rude finger or the one finger salute is an obscene hand gesture, which is often a sign of extreme or moderate contempt, roughly equivalent in meaning to "fuck off", "fuck you", "shove it up your ass", or "go fuck yourself." It is performed by showing the back of a closed fist that has only the middle finger extended upwards, though in some locales the thumb is also extended. Extending the finger is considered a symbol of contempt in several cultures, especially Western cultures. Many cultures do use similar gestures to display their disrespect, though others use it to express pointing with no intentional disrespect toward other cultures. The middle finger gesture was used in Ancient Greece as a symbol of anal intercourse, in a manner meant to degrade, intimidate and threaten the individual receiving the gesture.[2] It also represented the phallus, with the fingers next to the middle finger representing testicles;[3] from its close association, the gesture may have assumed apotropaic potency.[4] In the 1st-century Mediterranean world, extending the finger was one of many methods used to divert the ever-present threat of the evil eye.[5]

The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th, or 9/11  were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Four passenger airliners were #hijacked by 19 #al -Qaeda terrorists so they could be flown into buildings in suicide attacks. Two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and #UnitedAirlinesFlight175 , were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the #WorldTradeCenter complex in #NewYorkCity . Within two hours, both towers collapsed with debris and the resulting fires causing partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the WTC complex, as well as significant damage to ten other large surrounding structures. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the #UnitedStatesDepartmentofDefense ), leading to a partial collapse in its western side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. In total, almost 3,000 people died in the attacks, including the 227 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes. It also was the deadliest incident for firefighters in the history of the United States. Suspicion quickly fell on #alQaeda . Although the group's leader, #OsamabinLaden , initially denied any involvement, in 2004, he claimed responsibility for the attacks. Al-Qaeda and #binLaden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence of U.S. troops in #SaudiArabia , and sanctions against #Iraq as motives for the attacks. The #UnitedStates responded to the attacks by launching the #WaronTerror and invading #Afghanistan to depose the #Taliban , which had harbored al-Qaeda. Many countries strengthened their #antiterrorism legislation and expanded #lawenforcement powers. Having evaded capture for years, bin Laden was located and killed by U.S. forces in May 2011. The destruction of the #TwinTowers and other properties caused serious damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan and had a significant effect on global markets, closing Wall Street until September 17 and the civilian airspace in the U.S. and Canada until September 13. Many closings, evacuations and cancellations followed the attack, either out of fear of further attacks or respect for the #tragedy . Cleanup of the World Trade Center site was completed in May 2002, and the Pentagon was repaired within a year. Numerous memorials have been constructed, including the National September 11 Memorial & #Museum in #NewYork , the #Pentagon Memorial, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in #Pennsylvania . On November 18, 2006, Construction of One World Trade Center began at the World Trade Center site. As of September 2013, the new tower's concrete construction is largely complete, and will officially open when the installation of podium glass and interior construction is completed in late 2013 or early 2014 At 8:46 a.m., five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center's North Tower (1 WTC), and at 9:03 a.m., another five hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower (2 WTC). Five hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. A fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, under the control of four hijackers, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, southeast of Pittsburgh, at 10:03 a.m. after the passengers fought the hijackers. Flight 93's target is believed to have been either the Capitol or the White House. Flight 93's cockpit voice recorder revealed crew and passengers tried to seize control of the plane from the hijackers after learning through phone calls that similarly hijacked planes had been crashed into buildings that morning.  Once it became evident to the hijackers that the passengers might regain control of the plane, the hijackers rolled the plane and intentionally crashed it.

Joseph, Baron Ducreux (June 26, 1735 – July 24, 1802) was a French portrait painter, pastelist, miniaturist, and engraver, who was a successful #portraitist at the court of Louis XVI of France, and was able to resume his career after the #FrenchRevolution . His less formal portraits show an interest in expanding the range of facial expressions beyond those of official portraiture. Born in Nancy, #France , Ducreux may have trained with his father, who was also a painter. When Ducreux went to #Paris in 1760, he trained as the only student of the pastelist Maurice-Quentin de La Tour, who specialized in portraiture. #JeanBaptiste Greuze was an important influence on Ducreux's oil technique. In 1769, Ducreux was sent to Vienna in order to paint a miniature of Marie-Antoinette (shown left) before she left the city in 1770 and married Louis XVI of France. Ducreux was made a baron and premier peintre de la reine (First Painter to the Queen) in #rewards for his services. Ducreux was given this appointment by Marie-Antoinette even though he was not a member of the #RoyalAcademy of #Painting and #Sculpture , which had been founded in 1648.

#MeGusta is a rage comic face that is typically used to express one’s approval of an #awkward or perverse situation. The caption “Me gusta” translates to “I like it” in #Spanish. In its beginning, the phrase conveyed an odd sense of pleasure in sexually #perverse contexts, but the meaning has since broadened to describe a more general state of being #disturbed and pleased at the same time. Origin The colloquial Spanish phrase “Me Gusta” was first adopted into a rage comic drawing by illustrator #MattOswald, who uploaded his artwork onto #4chan [5] and Reddit [6] on March 18th, 2010. The drawing was also uploaded onto his personal #Tumblr blog[3] and #DeviantART  account. Oswald eventually revealed himself as the creator of “Me Gusta” face in a Reddit thread[1] as well as an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread[2] on March 8th, 2011. In December 2010, the single topic blog Me Gusta Face[12] was launched to curate the comics. As of May 2012, the series ranked in the “#FuckYeah” tier on Memegenerator [7] and thousands of “Me Gusta” rage comics can be found on Tumblr [8], #Memebase and on #Reddit’s popular F7U12 subreddit. #MeGustaMucho is a variation of Me Gusta with the mouth changed to a smile. A rage comic face used in response to something that is painful or awkward to experience but somehow simultaneously soothing or pleasant.  A rage comic face used in response to something that you enjoy which might be considered strange. Often confused with the literal Spanish translation 'it pleases me'. My face went into my girlfriend's armpit last night--me gusta. pretty much the spanish translation of "i like", made infamous by the sublime song "caress me down". this phrase sounds cooler than "i like", so it is therefore acceptable to be used in everyday conversation, especially when complementing someone. spanglish is always a fun thing. warning: any overuse of this phrase will become annoying to your peers, so use with caution!
